Rarotongan soldiers standing next to artillery shells. During the British advance through Palestine the New Zealand Rarotongan Company were used as ammunition handlers attached to No. 97 Heavy Battery, Royal Regiment of Artillery. They helped to carry ammunition to the firing line and worked to conceal ammunition dumps from enemy knowledge. Later in the war they helped clear stockpiles of captured enemy ammunition.
