
Fourteen conscientious objectors were deported to the front in July 1917, aboard the troopship Waitemata. This photograph shows several of them being forcibly dressed in uniform aboard ship. The group, who became known as ‘the 14’, were to suffer imprisonment, starvation, and physical brutality in the months ahead.
