A German Fokker Eindecker in the air, circa 1915. These E-series monoplanes delivered unremarkable performance but had a forward-firing machine gun synchronised to fire between the propeller blades. This gave them a huge edge over their British and French opponents, whom they were able to dominate from the summer of 1915 until the Battle of the Somme in 1916 – a period known as ‘The Fokker Scourge’.
