
The New Zealand Division launched an attack on the fortified ruins of Polderhoek Chateau in the Ypres Salient on 3 December 1917. The assault, carried out by the 1st Otago and 1st Canterbury battalions, quickly ground to a halt against determined German resistance. The New Zealanders suffered some 500 casualties, including over 100 dead.
