Ngata had contributed hugely to the revival of the Māori people in the early 20th century. His intelligence, tact, persistence and political skill helped him promote Māori culture and identity.

4 January 1869

Pursued by Māori and colonial troops to Ngātapa, an old hilltop pā inland from Poverty Bay, Te Kooti narrowly avoided capture after a three-day siege. Many of those with him were captured and executed the following day.

Scottish officers' sword presented to Ngāti Porou leader, Major Rāpata Wahawaha (1807-1897) for his service to the Crown during the New Zealand Wars.
