The Order of the Pour le Mérite

The Order of the Pour le Mérite

The Order of the Pour le Mérite, known informally as 'The Blue Max', was Germany's highest First World War military honour. Fighter aces such as Oswald Boelcke, Max Immelmann, Manfred von Richthofen (the 'Red Baron'), and Ernst Udet were its most famous recipients.

This type of medal was also earned by Ernst Junger, while in action against New Zealand infantry in the fighting at Rossignol Wood, near Gommecourt in Northern France.
